Farther Afield
We aren’t certain of many things, but one thing we know for sure: the truest way to spread the spirit of Christianity is by giving freely, and without expectation, of ourselves.

Volunteers urgently needed!

Due to an increase in the number of individuals who are

in need of home delivered meals, volunteers are needed

to deliver noontime meals to homebound elderly in the Grafton area. You may deliver alone, as a couple, with a friend, or with your children. If you are able to share an hour a month of your time, please contact Mary at the Ozaukee County Aging Services Department:

262-238-8120

or 262-284-8120.

Local young people visit the

mountains of Mexico

A small team of high school and college students from Ozaukee and North Shore Congregational Churches spent the week of December 26 – January 3 south of the border, and about 10,000 feet above sea level.  These students included:

     Susannah Carson (North Shore)

     Emily Campbell (Ozaukee)

     Abby Cole (North Shore)

     Rob Fredrickson (Ozaukee)

     Kayla Roble (Ozaukee)

     Bo Wilkinson (Ozaukee)

The group visited Misión Mazahua, located about three hours’ drive from Mexico City. The mission teaches the indigenous Mazahua people how to work with stained glass and ceramics, sculpt rugs, grow chilies and other crops, and make granola. Classes are offered for primary school children, and pastoral studies courses are provided for young adults pursuing ministry as a career path. There are even special recreational and educational programs for those who are wheelchair-bound.

While at the mission, Ozaukee Congregational’s team did a lot of sealing, painting, and staining—and helped construct a 16,000-liter cement cistern, providing clean water to a nearby village. Future visits to Misión Mazahua are already in the works. For more information about the mission, please visit www.mazahuamission.com.

The group returned home physically exhausted but with a new understanding: you can give and give yet get much more than you ever expected in return.

“Read with Me” — Tuesday, July 6

Help instill the gift of reading in the minds of young children! Join Rob Fredrickson for a visit to the Next Door Foundation. We’ll leave OCC at 8:20 and return about noon.

What’s a

“Caregiver Kit”?

Your Benevolence Board invites you to join in a special summer project to benefit World Vision’s work in parts of Africa severely affected by AIDS. For just $28, a Caregiver Kit—a portable plastic case and the medical supplies used to bring comfort to AIDS patients—can be purchased. The Benevolence Box will be ready to receive donations beginning on June 13. We’ll send our donations to World Vision, and, on our behalf, they’ll purchase one case and set of contents for each $28 we raise. We’ll then have a late-summer Sunday morning “assembly line” in Fellowship Hall, where all ages can help prepare the cases for shipping and use. Watch for the plexiglas box, coming to the sanctuary on June 13!

Hope House food pantry: Sat., Aug. 7

We’ll leave OCC at 9:20 a.m., and return about 12:40. While on site, we’ll re-stock and re-organize their food pantry, and help with their food distribution program as well.

Milwaukee Rescue Mission: Sat., Aug. 14

We’ll leave OCC at 8:20 a.m., returning about 11:40. From 9:00 till 11:00, we’ll help clean some classrooms, stuff some backpacks, and perhaps do a little outdoor work, too (weather permitting).

Adults & youth: To sign up for any of the above opportunities, contact Rob at 414-688-8991 or rcf474@gmail.com

Honduras Mission Trip: July 25 – Aug. 3

Please pray for safe travels and transformative experiences for OCC’s team of Susannah Carson, Theresa Foy, Rob Fredrickson, Lisa Millard, Andy Radtke, Johnny Radtke, Katie Radtke, and Mikey Scherer. We’ll bring back stories and photos!

Thank you for your compassionate generosity!

  • The Plexiglas Benevolence Box recently received $1,057 in donations for the work of the Rev.    Sa Do and the Congregational Churches of Myanmar.
  • As this is being mailed, Rob Fredrickson is at Mission Mazahua in Mexico, carrying over $300 of cash donations from OCC members. That money will be used to buy vitamins with folic acid, addressing a specific health concern for the women of the area.

 Speaking of Mexico…

…Ben Helm, Cindy Helm, and Rob Fredrickson are due home on July 1. The team thanks you for the prayers you offered over these last ten days, and the folks at Mission Mazahua renew their expressions of gratitude for OCC’s ongoing friendship.

Stay tuned for breaking news

  • Samuel Tesfaye, our Compassion International buddy in Ethiopia has reached the age of 18 and “graduated” from Compassion’s program. He’s now in the adult “work-a-day” world, thanks to the support we provided over these last four years or so. We’re awaiting word from Compassion as to the identity of our next Compassion child.
  • We’re also awaiting word from World Vision with details on the Caregiver Kit project described in last month’s newsletter. This will be a great multi-generational project! Stay tuned!
